New Zealand health insurance claims increase

Health insurance claim payouts hit a record NZ$265 million (US$206.3 million) in the September quarter, raising an alarm for insurers, according to the Health Funds Association of New Zealand (HFANZ).

The record quarter takes annual claims to almost a billion dollars a year, and underpins the contribution health insurance makes to overall healthcare costs, the association said in a statement.

HFANZ chief executive Roger Styles said that the recent increases in claims paid were unsurprising because public health funding increases continued to be restricted to minimal levels.
